Tiny houses are all the rage right now, with people living in little spaces no bigger than the bed of a pick up truck. To save money many people are turning to smaller and smaller properties to live small while they pay of student loans, save up for a new vehicle, put extra money towards their retirement fund, etc. While many people cannot imagine living that way, most who do swear by it.
Living small has a lot of benefits, but you have to do it effectively or it will feel like you’re living in a hoarders closet. You don’t want to feel claustrophobic. So, if you are living in a small space, how can you maximize it to contain everything you need but still feel spacious?
1). Be frugal. Do you need five mixing bowls? No you don’t. Only keep the necessities. This may strike you has horribly inconvenient at first, but you will adjust just fine. Trust us. For excess things, such as childhood memorabilia, rent a little storage room somewhere to keep it safe for you.
2). Organize like you have never organized before. We highly recommend googling creative storage ideas (check out IKEA furniture hacks) in order to maximize your storage space without making your room impossible to walk through. You’ll have to get creative, but it can be done. Remember to use all the space available. Think of it like packing the back of your car before a road trip: you need to store things, but the seating area can’t be covered in duffle bags.
3). Build or renovate the space so things can be flipped up (such as a bed and table) rather than them sticking out all the time. Another thing you can do is have things that pull out, such as an ironing board that pulls out of a cabinet. Maximizing walking space is key. You cannot have your floors completely covered with things.
4). Install new windows or mirrors! It may be an optical illusion, but windows and mirrors make spaces look bigger by letting in lights and reflecting more. This is why so many tiny houses are almost all window. This will also brighten up the space tremendously, making the area look more clean and fresh.
