In Calgary it typically rains the most during the month of June, and this year has been no different. The rain is a welcome alternative to the snow, and a refreshing way for spring to flow into summer. The rain makes the grass a little greener, the flowers bloom, the crops flourish and the worms happy. As long as the river doesn't rise as much as it did in 2013, we will be happy!
This weekend Calgary is expected to be hit with classic summertime thunderstorms, and you need to be prepared for the downpour. While we do appreciate the moisture, storms have the potential to cause numerous problems that you need to be prepared for.
The most common negative outcome of a thunderstorm is a power outage. When this happens, you need to be prepared. Take some time to put together an emergency, power-outage kit that includes:
- External Battery
- Dry Food
Usually in Calgary power outages only last a couple of minutes, but be prepared to go a couple hours without power if need be. As soon as you lose power, find your emergency kit and light some candles to help you move through your home safely. Go through each room and unplug all major devices such as televisions, computers, air conditioning, etc.. Sometimes when the power comes back on abruptly, something already turned on can cause a spark that could lead to a fire.
If a storm were ever to get really bad, stay away from windows and seek shelter in the most structurally strong part of your home, such as a basement or under the stairs. Bring your emergency kit with you and a battery operated radio for updates on how to seek emergency help if needed.
