Winter is coming...
Next week Calgary is expected to receive its first major snowfall! The first snow of the year always leads to chaos on the roads. Here are some tips for navigating extreme weather conditions:
- Set Up a Block Heater: "Cold weather can weaken your battery, making it harder to start your vehicle. Keeping your block heater plugged in when temperatures drop below -15°C can make a huge difference" (AMA).
- Invest in Winter Tires: "Winter or snow tires are specially designed for the low temperatures and snowy and icy conditions we experience in Alberta. They provide better traction than regular or all-season tires. All tire rubber stiffens as the weather gets colder, but the latest generations of winter tires maintain their elasticity even at extremely low temperatures" (Province of Alberta).
- Dress Warmly: "You might not plan to spend time in the cold, but you should always be prepared for the worst-case scenario. This includes dressing in warm, comfortable layers and keeping extra winter clothing in your car to keep everyone warm in the event of a breakdown" (AMA).
- Keep Your Car Fueled: "Keep your vehicle's gas tank more than half full of fuel to help reduce moisture in your fuel system. A topped-up gas tank also adds extra weight to your vehicle and will help if you become stranded" (Province of Alberta).
- Get An Emergency Roadside Kit: "All emergency roadside kits should include road cones, winter clothing, blankets, first aid supplies and non-perishable food items. If you use items from your emergency roadside kit, be sure to replace them promptly" (AMA).
- Practice Safe Driving: "Slow down, as posted speed limits are intended for ideal road conditions (and winter roads are not ideal). Plan your destination ahead of time. Keep your headlights on so drivers behind you can see your taillights - don’t rely on daytime running lights. Don't use cruise control. Know your braking system and how it reacts on ice. And more..." (Province of Alberta).
- Keep Your Windows Clear: "Always clear your windshield, windows and lights of snow and mud before driving. In the worst weather conditions, you’ll need as much visibility as you can get. Consider getting winter wiper blades for your windshield, as they feature rubber designed for extreme weather conditions" (AMA).
Most important of all: take a deep breath. Winter driving in Calgary can be chaotic, but you can only control so much. Do you best, give yourself time, and remember: spring is around the corner.
