Christmas is such a beautiful time of the year in Calgary, Alberta, in part because of all the Christmas lights. Whether you are a vintage colourful lights person, or a modern white lights person, so many people adorn their homes and trees with twinkly bulbs. While this makes the season feel extra warm and cheery, Christmas lights do carry some risk.
Here are some tips for Christmas light safety, so that you can enjoy all of the magic and none of the risk:
- Check your strings of lights for any broken or missing bulbs. CNET writes, "replace any missing or broken bulbs before you string up your porch or tree because they could lead to electrocution, fires or injuries. Most lights come with replacement bulbs, but you can also buy a pack at your local home improvement store for about $3."
- Make sure that you're using the right kind of lights for inside and outside decorating. Home Hardware writes, "outdoor Christmas lights are made with sturdier materials that can better withstand moisture and extreme temperatures. Indoor Christmas lights are immune from the weather but are tested for fire safety and approved for use as Christmas tree lights. Follow the same rules when using extension cords; use outdoor-rated cords for outside lights and indoor cords for indoor lights."
- Be sensible when stringing up your lights, especially for high and hard-to-reach areas. Stay Safe writes, "test your lights at ground level before climbing. Check that the ladder sits on level ground and have someone hold it steady. Most decorating injuries each December come from falls, not fires."
- When it comes to plugging in all of your lights, be mindful. The Government of Canada writes, "avoid plugging too many lights and decorations into an outlet. Overloaded circuits can overheat and start a fire." Similarly, make sure outlets are in a dry place where moisture can't cause issues.
- Finally, keep an eye on anyone and anything that may confuse string lights for a toy. This Old House writes, "children and pets are naturally curious, especially during the holiday season, so keeping lights and cords out of their reach is important. Use cord clips to secure any loose wires, and always supervise young children when they are near holiday decorations."
Be safe and enjoy the festive season!
