Organizing your Move

Get estimates from different moving companies to see what works best for your budget. Make sure you also read their online reviews to ensure you've found high quality movers. Two weeks before your move call and confirm the date and time they will be arriving.

Sell, give away, and discard belongings you don’t want to bring to your new home. As you go through things, begin packing them up. Make sure to make detailed lists of what exactly is in each box. Also make sure you set aside some basics (clothes, toiletries, a single set of dishes) to take with you so for your first night before unpacking everything else.

Cancel memberships and subscriptions that are location specific (clubs, community associations, etc.), and get copies of your medial and school records. Everything needs to be transitioned to the new house and location so that nothing gets missed! If your old address is attached to it, it needs to be updated.

Make sure that between you, the people moving into your old house, and the people moving out of your new house, no move in/move out dates conflict. Your real estate agent will help with this during the negotiation phase. Finalize any travel plans (flights, hotel reservations, etc.) and get ready for a brand new start!

Scrub your house from top to bottom! Do any last minute repairs, steam clean the carpets, wipe down the walls, mow the lawn one last time, etc.. Think of it as your farewell gift to your old home. This also ensures the new owners will not come chasing you for unfinished business. Any specific parameters should be laid out in the real estate transaction.

Turn down heat, turn off the water and make sure all lights are off.

Keep personal luggage away from movers, along with the box of things for your first night that we mentioned above. Be on hand to help movers and ensure that everything gets packed. Keep an eye on fragile boxes.

Do one final sweep of the house to make sure you didn’t forget anything! While you're at it, take time to say goodbye. Transitions are exciting, but can be more emotional than you may expect.
