Cool Summer Treats

Summertime is in full swing after a particularly rainy July! The sky is blue, the sun is bright, and the warm breeze is bringing everyone back outside. This is the moment you dreamed of on that bitterly cold day in February, so make the most of it.

On beautiful summer days, we all crave one thing: a sweet treat. Today’s treats are all about helping cool you down during these dry Alberta heat spells. They all include ingredients that you can pick up at your local grocery store and they are great to share with your family and friends:

  1. Chocolate Banana Popsicles: This one is so easy that you're likely already dropping everything to go make it. First, melt down some chocolate chips in the microwave with a little bit of coconut oil, and peal bananas. Stick a popsicle stick into the banana and dip it in the melted chocolate. Then, put the dipped bananas on a baking sheet and stick them in the freezer overnight. Serve them frozen and enjoy!
  2. Fruitschcabob: This one is also extremely easy to make. Cut up a bunch of fruit and stick them in whatever pattern you like on a BBQ skewer! Serve them just like that—they’re tasty, pretty, and very healthy for you! It makes grabbing a quick treat easy.
  3. Homemade Popsicles: Blend up your favourite fruits with your favourite juice, and pour into a popsicle mold to freeze overnight. The popsicles at the grocery store can be full of preservatives and food dye. This method ensures you're getting a kid-safe, budget friendly option.
  4. Adults Only: Nothing is sweet in summertime quite like a cold drink on a hot day. If you want to add a little extra to your drink of choice, make some adult-friendly ice-cubes! Cut up whatever fruit you like most (berries work the best) and put them in each hole of an ice cube tray, then fill the trays with whatever alcoholic beverage you so desire and put the tray in the freezer. Pop these ice cubes in a soda or fruit punch to give your drink a little something extra!
