Day 13: Celebrating Ontario this Canada 150

Ontario and Alberta have a complicated relationship; particularly in Calgary, one of the country's main Oil and Gas hubs. Though we may have our differences, we are also similar in some ways! Our buyer's agent, Sapna Sharma, moved to Calgary from Toronto and has noted how some of our inner-city and downtown neighborhoods remind her of Toronto.

As part of our continuation of the Canada 150 blogging series, here is a brief history of Ontario:

The area of present day Ontario, Canada was originally inhabited by the Algonquian, Iroquois and Huron aboriginal tribes. Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer who reached Lake Huron in 1615 and prompted French missionaries to established ports around the Great Lakes. The Native American tribes of Ontario were decimated by infectious diseases these settlers brought over, and the Iroquois became allies with the English, who eventually took over.

Have you ever wondered why Ontario feels more "American" than the rest of Canada? Well it may be partly because the Crown gave land to British Loyalists coming up to Canada from the United States following the American Revolution.

This Canada 150, Ontario is also celebrating their 150th birthday. After all, they were one of the first four original provinces to become part of Canada. To celebrate they launched an unofficial provincial anthem. Here are the lyrics:

Give us a place to stand, give us a place to grow, and call this land Ontario
A place to live for you and me, with hopes as high as the tallest tree

Give us a land of lakes and a land of snow, and we will build Ontario
A place to stand, a place to grow, Ontario

From the Western Hills to the Northern shores
To Niagara Falls where the waters roar

Give us a land of peace, where the free winds blow, and we will build Ontario
A place to stand, a place to grow, Ontario
