Every month brings unique challenges and opportunities for your property. Instead of getting overwhelmed by everything all at once, consider breaking down property maintenance and projects month-by-month.
Here is the month of December's property checklist:
- Keep your kitchen safe and fire-hazard free! Safe Wise writes, "between holiday dinners and baking for family and friends, your oven and range will get a workout this December. Protect your family from cooking fires by keeping your appliances in top shape."
- Confirm your outdoor lights are working to keep you safe. Real Estate Spice writes, "be sure all your outdoor lights are working. It gets darker earlier and the weather conditions can be treacherous. Make sure all your walkways are clearly at night. Check your outdoor garage lighting. Consider installing outdoor solar lights with motion detector."
- Keep an eye on your property's trees when it snows. Houzz writes, "a buildup of heavy snow on tree limbs can make them more prone to breaking. Brush snow off tree limbs after each big snowfall, using a broom to extend your reach. If a limb does fall, have it removed as soon as the weather permits."
- Change your furnace filter. Safe Wise writes, "now that you're spending more time indoors, you'll want to breathe clean indoor air. Change out your furnace air filter every three months so you and your family can breathe easily. "
- Get ready for winter storms. Houzz writes, "check the condition of your snow shovels, gloves and window scrapers, and replace as needed. Store snowy-weather supplies near the door where you can access them easily in a storm, and mark the sides of your driveway and other key places with reflective poles, to help the snow plowers see where to go. "
- Install a thermostat that can be programed from your phone. Real Estate Spice writes, "a programmable thermostat helps maintain a consistent temperature and can reduce heating costs by automatically lowering the temperature when you’re asleep or away."
