DIY Valentine's Day Gifts

Valentine's Day is today!

Some people are critical of Valentine's Day. Theask, "why must there be a specific day of the year to force people to show love? In a healthy relationship, every day should be Valentine's Day. You shouldn't need an arbitrary Hallmark holiday to do something special." While some of this argument is valid, because it is true that you should love on those important to you all year round, it neglects to remember this:

No matter how much you love someone, there is no possible way for every single day to be filled with wild love and special moments. Love is messy, life is crazy, and not every day will be a perfect fairytale. Does this mean your love is not beautiful? No! It is passion, both good and bad, that fuels relationships. It may never be perfect, but it is yours. There is something truly romantic about choosing to love someone each and every day, no matter what, through the good and the bad.

So, Valentine's Day does, in fact, have value. It is a chance for us all to pause and tell our significant others that they are loved and cherished. It is the perfect opportunity to do something special! However, special does not always have to be a fancy dinner and helicopter ride--this isn't the Bachelor, after all.

Here are some DIY Valentine's Day gifts you can give to the people you love most:

To Your One True Love: Plan a year's worth of dates. The first one can be on Valentine's Day. Do whatever your significant other's favourite thing is, whether that is going to a unique coffee shop, seeing a show, window shopping at the mall, walking around the zoo, whatever! Make the day all about them. At the end of the night, present them with 12 cards, one for each month. At the start of each month, open the envelope and see what date is on for that month (that means you have to plan ahead).

To Your Palentine: Your friends deserve to know you love them, too! Put together a "treat yourself" basket for them. Purchase a nice basket and place inside their favourite drink, snack, magazine, bath bomb, etc.! Make it all about them. People love when they feel like they have been given permission to step back and treat themselves.

To Your Coworkers: This Valentine's Day is on a work day, so don't forget about your coworkers! Bring in cookies, it's as simple as that. Either make them yourself or find fun Valentine's day treats at the store. Leave a note so that they know they can help themselves!

Remember: it is always, always, always the thought that counts. Go out of your way to do something extraordinary for those you love, big or small. Nothing fills the heart more than generous acts of love.

Have a great Valentine's Day!
