With Christmas over, Calgarians are buckling back down and tightening their purse strings. With this in mind, here are some fun and free activities to enjoy in the wintertime:
- Kananaskis Hiking: Calgary is at the doorstep of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Whether you are a seasoned climber or a novice hiker, there are trails for all skill levels and age groups. Places like the grotto offer an incredible peak into the indigenous hieroglyphics, and there is even a cold war bunker you can hike up to in Heart Creek. You don't have to scale a mountain, but it is nice to get some fresh air and enjoy everything the mountains have to offer. Pack a lunch and some snacks and enjoy!
- Studio Bell: Much like the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, Studio Bell allows you to step into Canada's rich music history with interactive exhibits and incredible artifacts. Studio Bell offered free admission for all of 2021, and they are extending this into the beginning of 2022 so act now! Perfect for the whole family, this is a great way to spend the afternoon right in the heart of downtown Calgary. With five levels to explore, there is something for everyone. Check it out!
- Skating at Bowness Park: Here at Team Ken Richter we love Bowness Park. When the lagoon freezes over in the wintertime, it becomes THE place to go ice skating. It has been Calgarian's favourite rink for decades and is rich with history. Bring your own skates (or rent a pair) and enjoy an afternoon gliding around the ice. With twinkly lights and fire pits, this is a classic Canadian winter activity that everyone can enjoy. Bundle up; it can get cold out there on the ice!
- Devonian Gardens: The Core Shopping Centre has it all; including the beautiful Devonian Gardens. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine you're somewhere warm and humid on a beach. There are some incredible tropical plants, a beautiful pathway system, and perfect photo opportunities. Many people actually get married and hold events here, because it so gorgeous and tucked away in a quiet area of the building. Explore it and the rest of downtown, if it's warm enough!
There is so much to do that costs nothing, you just have to get a little creative.
Have fun!
