Calgary, Alberta truly shines during the holiday season. The city is aglow with gorgeous light displays, opportunities to meet Santa, tasty treats, artisan markets, and so much more. Regardless of what holiday you celebrate during this month, there is something for everyone. It can be the busiest time of the year, but also the most fun!
We recognize that with the increase in the cost of living, many Calgarian’s budgets are stretched thin this year. This is why in today’s blog we are highlighting some free activities to enjoy during the holiday break. You do not need to spend money in order to make this season merry and bright. Here are some ideas:
- Skating Bowness Lagoon: This time-honoured tradition is absolutely beloved by Calgarians, and completely free of cost. Bring your skates to the Bowness Lagoon for some holiday ice skating. Twinkly lights adorn the trees, fireplaces are spotted throughout to warm up, and the ice is well-cared for.
- Light Display Exploring: The downtown core goes all out for Christmas. Walk through the various office buildings and avenues for gorgeous Christmas light displays. Olympic Plaza, The Core Mall, Stephen Avenue, East Village, and more all light up for the season. Make an afternoon outing of it. Also, don’t forget about the Lions Light Display off of 16th avenue!
- Southcentre Mall Christmas Activities: Southcentre Mall is going all out this holiday season! Visit Santa in his village, check out Santa’s Reading Nook, and enjoy Cookie Decorating. Everything is free or available for a charitable donation. If you need to get out of the house with your kids, this is the perfect place to do so. See the magic of the holiday season through their eyes.
- Volunteering: So many incredible organizations offer volunteer opportunities during this time of the year. Check them out for a great afternoon outing that won't cost you anything, and gives back to the community.
