Happy Summer Solstice, Calgary!
What is summer solstice? This year it falls on Sunday, June 20th. It marks the official start of the summer. National Geographic writes, "solstices occur because Earth’s axis of rotation is tilted about 23.4 degrees relative to Earth's orbit around the sun. This tilt is what drives our planet's seasons, as the Northern and Southern Hemispheres get unequal amounts of sunlight over the course of a year. From March to September, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted more toward the sun, driving its spring and summer. From September to March, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away, so it feels autumn and winter. The Southern Hemisphere's seasons are reversed."
Throughout history different places and cultures have marked the beginning of summer solstice in a variety of ways. The great pyramids of Giza are lined up to perfectly capture the solstice rising sun. The Scandinavian holiday of Midsummer rings in the solstice with maypole dancing, drinking and romantic love. Ancient Romans celebrated both the summer and winter solstice with week long parties. National Geographic writes that in Fairbanks, Alaska, "people can get up to 22.5 hours of daylight in the summer, so they swing in the summer solstice with a nighttime baseball game. The Midnight Sun Game has been played 114 times now since 1906. Twenty-one of the games have lasted past 1:00am; the 2018 game ended in a walk-off home run."
