This holiday season we are in pursuit of an old-fashioned Christmas. Be gone days of ipads and gizmos! Instead let us embrace simplicity and handmade charm. An old-fashioned Christmas is a great way to bring the whole family back down to earth, where the focus can be on what really matters: time spent together, making little moments magical.
To set the stage, here are some old-fashioned Christmas crafts to try out this season:
- Edible Garland: Gather a collection of apples, oranges, cranberries, popcorn, and cinnamon sticks. Cut the apples and oranges as thin as possible, then lay them out on parchment with the whole cranberries and bake them at a low temperature until the fruit dries out. Pop the popcorn, skipping any butter or seasoning. Then, use twine and a needle to make a garland out of everything! We do not recommend this for homes with pets or young children.
- Felt Ornaments: Head to your local craft supply store to get different colored felt, colorful string, quilting stuffing, glitter, beads, and anything else you think is cute. At home print out the different shapes you want to make, from letters to gingerbread men. Use the paper shapes to help you cut your felt to size, ensuring there is a front and back piece. Hand sew the felt pieces together, leaving a small space to stuff before closing it all the way. Once made you can decorate however you want.
- Paper Snowflakes & Chains: This is a classic. Fold basic white printer paper to make snowflakes, and use some string to hang them from the ceiling or tape to the windows. Using the same paper, or some fun Christmas paper, make paper chains to drape over the mantel and railings. This is a great kid-friendly craft that we all grew up doing, so pass the tradition on!
