This week has been a tumultuous one weather-wise. From hail to tornado warnings, Calgarians everywhere have been hunkering down and taking refuge from the storms. While blue sky has managed to sneak through the gloomy clouds for hours at a time, it remains a terrible tease for what August is typically like here. Rain, rain go away, don’t come back another day.
In today’s post, we want to take your mind off the rainy weather. It will go away soon, we promise. After all, this isn’t Vancouver. We want to prepare you for when the rain finally does go away and you can go back to enjoying Calgary in all of its glory. Since Bowness and Montgomery are two of Team Ken Richter’s favourite communities, we’re going to focus on what they have to offer for beautiful outdoor green spaces.
Bowness Park has a long and cherished history. It was built in the town of Bowness before it became part of Calgary, right before the First World War, by John Hextall. It was built as a weekend retreat for Calgarians, and is still a place that many go to for relaxation. The park features great trails, a secluded lagoon for canoeing with access to the Bow River, picnic areas, and a Tea House. Nothing rivals it in old world charm, a place for you to take refuge from the busy city life in. Pack your favourite lunch and soak in the atmosphere at this great park.
If you are looking to admire some local athletes while you enjoy a sunny picnic, head to Montgomery’s Shouldice Athletic Park. Located next to the Bow River, Shouldice Park contains football turfs, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, washrooms, and picnic areas. The park is thriving despite now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing, and is a fantastic space to wonder around on any afternoon. You can even rent a picnic area for bigger events!
Calgary is fortunate enough to have plenty of green spaces within city limits. We may have a concrete jungle, but there is also plenty of natural green areas to enjoy. Bowness and Montgomery in particular are two communities that have a lot to offer, from small parks to beautiful sidewalk strolls.
As soon as the sun comes back out, go outside and enjoy these parks!
