Settling Into The New School Year

Settling into the new school year is always a difficult transition. Summertime is filled with such a sense of freedom and possibility, that getting back into a new routine and structure can feel stifling and overwhelming. Here are some tips for you and your loved ones as you adjust to the changing of the seasons:

  • Stay positive! Great Schools writes, "as the first day draws near, begin talking to your child about [their] expectations, hopes, and worries about the upcoming school year. Reassure [them] that other children are having the same feelings. Present school as a place where [they'll] learn new things and make friends."
  • Keep your home environment as stable as possible to reduce new routine overload. Parent Map writes, "delay making other big changes that affect your child at home before and during the transition... For example, hold off on rearranging your child’s bedroom or getting a new pet."
  • Start adjusting to the new schedule by focusing on Sleep Health. Great Schools writes, "if your child has enjoyed a vacation of late nights and lazy mornings, getting up for school on the first day may be difficult. Help make this transition easier by starting the school-year sleep routine a week or two in advance. Sleep is the best booster for a learning brain."
  • Make sure your child is set up with supports outside of the home. Parent Map writes, "remind [them] that it’s okay to ask for help, whether with schoolwork, skills or mental health. Name some of the resources they may have at school, like their guidance counselor and tutors."
  • Make the night before count; it will make it easier on everyone in the home! Great Schools writes, "to avoid the morning rush, lay out clothes, make lunch, and pack backpacks the night before. Be sure to get everyone up extra early so you’ll have plenty of time to calmly get ready and get out the door on time."

You've got this! Soon the new routine will be an old routine, and everyone will be settled in for success.
