Calgary may be a bustling urban center, but it’s also a paradise for nature lovers. From sprawling parks to scenic river pathways, the city offers countless ways to stay connected to the great outdoors—all without sacrificing access to great schools, shops, and city amenities.
Whether you’re into hiking, biking, birdwatching, or just relaxing in green spaces, these Calgary communities strike the perfect balance between city living and nature-filled serenity:
Bowness: Bowness blends urban charm with riverside recreation. This historic northwest community is adjacent to Bowness Park, a local favourite for skating, canoeing, and picnics. This community has outdoor fun for every season!
Canyon Meadows: This southeast community borders Fish Creek Provincial Park, a massive green space that offers 100+ km of paved and unpaved trails. It’s a haven for bikers, runners, and photographers. Talk about picturesque!
Silver Springs: Located in the northwest, Silver Springs backs onto the Bowmont Natural Environment Park, a gorgeous network of ravines, pathways, and cliffs overlooking the Bow River. The outlook points are absolutely gorgeous in the fall!
Cranston: Set against the backdrop of the Bow River, this master-planned community has abundant green space and scenic lookouts. Riverstone in particular feels like an escape to the countryside, while still being part of the city. This is pinnacle Alberta city living.
Inglewood: Looking for nature and character? Inglewood offers both. This historic community borders the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, Bow Habitat Station, and the Elbow River, blending charm and ecology. This is a bird-watchers inner-city paradise.
Tuscany: Tuscany offers not only mountain views but also a direct connection to nature. The Tuscany Ravine and access to the Twelve Mile Coulee make it one of northwest Calgary’s most scenic neighbourhoods.
Discovery Ridge: Tucked into Calgary’s southwest, Discovery Ridge borders Griffith Woods Park, a peaceful forested area with towering spruce trees and the Elbow River running through it. Griffith Woods is filled with wildlife, including frequent bear sightings!
Crescent Heights: For a more urban setting that doesn’t sacrifice nature, Crescent Heights is a hidden gem. Overlooking the Bow River and downtown, this area offers some of the best views and green spaces within walking distance of the city core. Make sure you have your camera handy!
