The Best House Plants

Did you know that greenery is good for your mental health?

Jamie Keaton Jones, LICSW, PhD, says, "plants and exposure to greenery have been found to have multiple mental health benefits, such as lowering stress, decreasing feelings of depression, increasing sociability, restoring focus, improving cognitive performance, improving mood, and increasing self-esteem" (The Healthy).

While it is too early to start digging in the garden, house plants provide an excellent alternative for people looking to enjoy greenery in the colder months. Here are some of the top houseplants that are easy to maintain and will benefit your mental health:

Philodendron Plant: "Philodendron plants, known for being low-maintenance, can thrive indoors if given the proper amount of sunlight and water. Philodendrons prefer indirect light and can grow in average home temperatures, making them easy to care for" (Good Housekeeping).

Snake Plant: "If you’re new to plant parenthood, starting off with an easy, no frills plant is best. (Read: One that will survive, even if you sometimes forget to water it.) Sword-shaped with dark green leaves and often mustard-yellow or white stripes make the snake plant stand out... It’s very easy to care for, thrives in spaces with low sunlight, has visual appeal, and filters the air" (The Healthy).

Succulents: "Succulents come in many shapes and sizes, and aloe vera plants in particular have medicinal properties and can help heal cuts, burns, and other kin aliments. Since succulents are drought-resistant, they really are the epitome of a stress-free plant that still adds that touch of nature you may crave, especially in urban areas" (Good Housekeeping).

Lavender: "Lavender is a beautiful herb that attracts plenty of pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. And, well-known for its relaxing scent, lavender 'has a calming effect, aids in reducing stress, promotes sleep, and has anti-inflammatory  properties when used as a topical for skin'... This means it’s great both in the garden, or clipped and dried in a bowl inside your space" (The Healthy).

Pothos: " When you picture a houseplant, the pothos, or Epipremnum pinnatum, is likely what comes to mind. They’re easy to grow, needing only indirect sunlight and infrequent watering. Plus, these plants are also aesthetically-pleasing, which can give you a sense of comfort at home" (Good Housekeeping).
