Activities To Do At Home When It's Freezing

When Calgary winter decides to show off, staying indoors isn’t just an option, it’s a lifestyle. The good news? Being stuck inside doesn’t have to mean boredom. Whether you’re riding out a snowstorm, or one of those icy weeks where even your eyelashes freeze, here are some cozy activities you can do at home:

1. Host a Cozy Movie or TV Marathon: Lean into full hibernation mode. Pick a theme — rom-coms, classic Disney, true crime, or that series everyone keeps telling you to watch — and make it an event. Dim the lights, pile on the blankets, and order in your favourite dinner and snacks.

2. Try a New Comfort Recipe Winter is prime time for cooking something warm and soul-soothing. Test out a new soup, homemade bread, slow-cooker chili, or baked dessert. The heat from cooking will warm up your house, and it’s a great way to make use of your non-perishables.

3. Have a Game Night: Pull out board games, card decks, or digital games you can play on your phone or TV. Embrace your competitive spirit and make it a multi-game spectacular! Solo night? Puzzle books, crosswords, or a massive jigsaw is a great way to keep your eyes off your phone and your brain satisfied.

4. Start (or Restart) a Creative Project: Cold days are perfect for creativity. Writing, painting, scrapbooking, journaling, knitting, or DIY projects all feel extra cozy when the world outside is frozen. Even organizing photos or creating a vision board can feel productive without needing to brave the cold.

5. Create a Home Spa Day: When it’s too cold to function, treat yourself. Face masks, long showers, bubble baths, nail care, or even just moisturizing your cold and dried up skin is a treat. Light a candle, put on a calming playlist, and pretend you’re at a spa — not hiding from frostbite.

Calgary winters may be cold, but they’re also an invitation to slow down, get cozy, and make the most of home. With the right mindset (and enough blankets), staying inside can feel less like being stuck — and more like a winter ritual worth enjoying.
