Congratulations on making it through another long work week. Your reward? The August long weekend! The long weekend is the perfect opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. There is a lot happening this August long weekend for you to enjoy. Here are some highlights to check out:
Heritage Day: Alberta celebrates Heritage Day each year on the first Monday of August, which is also always the long weekend. This year Heritage Day is August 7th! Calendar Canada writes, "this day is to recognize and celebrate the variety and richness of cultural heritage of the province of Alberta." Here are some places around Calgary to celebrate Heritage Day:
- Heritage Park Heritage Day: Here's Heritage Park's challenge for you: "Can you meet our Heritage Adventure Challenge? We’ve got 150 reasons to visit the park this season, and we want to see how many you can do in just one day! Pick up your very own passport when you arrive on Heritage Day and collect as many stamps as you can. Contestants can enter their completed passports at the end of the day and enter to win a variety of prizes." Check it out! For more information, visit their event page HERE.
- Heritage Day at Fort Calgary: Fort Calgary is another place that is always celebrating Alberta's unique heritage, but like Heritage Park, they will be offering special activities geared towards kids this Heritage Day. Enjoy special exhibits, tours, performances and more. At Fort Calgary there is a particular emphasis on the indigenous heritage of Calgary, which is incredibly important to value and understand. Enjoy authentic indigenous storytelling, games and a powwow dance. View event details HERE.
- Heritage Day Festival at Olympic Plaza: This year is the 40th annual Heritage Day Festival at Olympic Plaza! They invite you to "come for 6 hours of multicultural performances, ethnic foods, and unique handicrafts. Explore the Indian Village, get face painted into a lion, jump in a bouncy castle, frolic in the water, try a new dish, or simply soak up the sun in front of the stage and enjoy the folk performances." For more information visit the event page HERE.
Tour De Bowness: The Tour De Bowness is happening all weekend, with rounds in Cochrane on Saturday, Calgary on Sunday and Bowness on Monday. This year will be the 16th anniversary of the event and promises to put on a spectacular showcase of biking and racing. Fit for the whole family, you can enjoy the race from many different vantage points each day. For more information and event details, visit their website HERE:
