Camping Tips and Tricks

It’s camping season! This summer has ushered in incredible weather, with plenty of rain and heat. The grass is green, the water is cool, and the sun is shining. Many Calgarians are taking advantage of this beautiful weather by packing up and heading to their favorite campsite to breathe in the fresh air. Looking for some tips and tricks to make your camping experience better? Here are some of our favorites:

Frozen Water Bottles: Instead of buying a bunch of ice for your cooler that will melt and leave a mess, instead buy a flat of water. Crack the lid and dump out a little bit from each bottle to release the pressure, then pop it in the freezer overnight. Once frozen, you can line your cooler with them to keep things icy! As they melt, they also provide you with cold drinking water.

Fire Starter: Collect a bunch of pinecones and dry them out on a sheet of parchment paper. Purchase a block of beeswax (from your local Beekeeper or a craft supply store) and melt it down in a pot on the stovetop. Once liquid, dip pinecones in the mixture so the tip of each spur is coated. Set aside to dry, then store in a sealed bag. These make great fire starters! Just place them in the middle of your wood teepee and light them up.

Prep Ahead: Camping is messy, with little to no meal prepping space. This is why we recommend doing everything you can ahead of time, so all you have to do out by the campfire is throw things together! For example, for Campfire nachos, you can pre-cook the meat and cut the veggies at home. Then on site, simply sprinkle them with cheese over your nachos. Think carefully through meals ahead of time to portion items out.
