Calgary loves to celebrate the holidays. A drive through any neighbourhood will quickly get you in the Christmas spirit. In Bowness, Christmas wreaths are lights adorn the streetlights and shops, giving the community even more of a festive, small-town feel. It is our favourite time of the year to drive through one of our favourite communities.
Here is an inexpensive holiday activity idea: get a cup of hot chocolate from Tim Hortons and take a drive through the city. Set your radio to 95.9 CHRM for non-stop Christmas music and turn up the heat. Not sure where to start on this beautiful, Christmas adventure? Here are some places to check out:
1). Downtown Core: Many buildings in the downtown core are adorned with Christmas lights inside and out. While you drive around make sure to also admire the Christmas cartoons painted on store windows and Christmas street light decor. If it's warm enough, take a walk down Stephen's Ave. While many of the shops and restaurants are closed due to new COVID-19 restrictions, the outside lights are gorgeous.
3). Light Displays: Every year the Zoo has a Christmas light feature that is world-renowned and absolutely incredible. With 1.5 MILLION twinkling lights, the Zoo's display is unsurpassable. See the exhibits come to life in new and Christmas-y ways. Santa will even be there to say hello! Another great display is the Lion's Festival of Lights at confederation park. This exhibit features the ways in which Christmas is celebrated around the world! You can drive by it only this year to encourage social distancing.
4). Neighbourhoods: One of the best places to see Christmas light displays is people's homes. In fact, in Calgary you can vote for the house with the best light display. We will keep you posted on where you can do this when the information becomes available. For now, check out these neighbourhoods that are notorious for having very dedicated home light decorators and nominate your favourite:
- Mount Royal
- Canyon Meadows
- Edgemont
