Exterior Finishes

Here in Calgary we are lucky enough to experience all four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. While others need not be concerned with weather patterns beyond one season’s limitations, Calgarians must be ready for anything. Evidence of this would be the snow that fell in some areas of Calgary earlier this week. In July.

While these differing seasons provide us with spectacular sights–Golden forests in the fall, fresh blankets of snow in the winter, blossoming flowers each spring and pink august skies–the weather each season brings can put a lot of strain on properties. Shifting ground, sun-bleached surfaces, hail damaged paneling: all results of the way our often unpredictable environment can damage our properties.

Exterior finishing already requires great care, but for Calgarians this care needs to include massive amounts of forethought. After all, you are not bracing your property for just one season: you need to be bracing it for all seasons and all of the potential weather those seasons include. You should also make sure you have a good insurance plan.

When it comes to exterior finishes, there are a number of things you need to keep in mind:

Painting & Staining: One of the biggest mistakes people make when painting or staining things outdoors is that they try to make shortcuts. You need to make sure you thoroughly clean and/or sand the surface before applying any product so that the surface will be able to retain the product efficiently. Make sure whatever product you buy is specifically for exterior use. These products will help prevent against cracking, sun-bleaching, and dirt/chip retention. You can find quality products for a good price, but do not cheap out because you will end up paying more in retouches in the long run.

Siding: Many people turn to siding, whether it be stonework or panels, to give their home a little facelift and add a fresh, modern touch. Doing this can be costly, but it will be even more costly if you don’t do it right the first time. Just like with painting and staining, buy products specifically for exterior use. Shy away from cheap glue adhesives as these will be more affected by changing whether patterns. For these things, it is best to consult and expert. Not only will they be able to help you find quality products for whatever environment you live in, but they will be able to help you avoid costly installation mistakes.

Exterior finishes can add a lot of value to your property, but make sure they can stand the test of Calgary weather!
