Holiday Decorating While Selling

One of the most important things you can do when selling your home is to stage it properly. Staging is the art of presenting your home in its best possible light. When staging your home, the goal is to make buyers come away from their visit able to envision themselves living there. It needs to be clean, bright, and clutter-free.

And what about during the holidays? What if you want to decorate for Halloween, or put up the Christmas lights?

When it comes to staging your home for sale during the holidays, we have one word for you: minimalism. Minimalism is all about ensuring every object has a function or a purpose. This does not mean your home has to be empty; it simply means it must be intentional. You can still enjoy the décor of the holidays while pursuing the minimalism that will get your home sold.

When you are decorating for the holidays, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does this décor make it hard for buyers to see key structural aspects of my property? Example: a giant Christmas tree hiding the beautiful view of the mountains from your living room.
  2. Does this décor make it hard for buyers to navigate viewing my property? Example: pumpkins on the steps making it difficult for buyers to squeeze past them, and potentially causing a dangerous tripping hazard.
  3. Could this décor be offensive, and turn away a qualified buyer? Example: dark or gruesome themed Halloween décor that will immediately cause a strong reaction.
  4. Is this décor adding to the ambiance of the space, or taking away from it? Example: a simple wreath on the door is a nice touch, but a crammed front porch display is too much.

So what do we recommend? Pick accent pieces, not trinkets. Keep the cute family heirlooms tucked away, and stick to more classic decor. Keep things simple and clean, but don't be afraid to get into the holiday spirit!

Best wishes!
