Have you begun watching Christmas movies? Classics such as Griswold Family Christmas, The Santa Clause, and Elf are staples in many homes and the perfect way to get in the holiday spirit. Another classic? Home Alone.
If you're not familiar with the plot of Home Alone, it goes as follows: a young boy is accidentally left at home when his family flies to Paris for Christmas vacation. He swiftly learns that one part of being a home owner is protecting your property. It brings up the age old question: how can you keep your home safe during the holidays?
First and foremost, recognize that the holidays always bring with them a rise in home crime. Homes are filled with more valuables than ever thanks to wrapped gifts, and people are typically more absent as they travel and attend holiday parties, leaving their properties more vulnerable and desirable to criminals. Calgary Police except to see similar levels of crime this year to ones previous and want to remind everyone to stay vigilant.
If you have not already, we recommend investing in a home security system. Right now doorbells with cameras and alarms linked are popular and affordable ways to keep your home safe. You should also make sure that every door and window in your home can be locked from the inside of the house. A really inexpensive option is to place a "Beware of Dog" sign on your door, even if you don't have a dog or if your dog is friendly. These $5.00 signs are proven to reduce your risk of home theft by over 75%!
If you are going to be away, make sure to have someone watching your home! Have them shovel, bring in your mail, park in your driveway; just something to make your house look lived in and have some activity. We also recommend leaving a light on a timer to turn off and one sporadically, and a radio quietly playing in the background.
Be present, be safe, and have a happy holidays!
