How To Have The Best House on The Block for Trick-or-Treat

Halloween is this Friday!

This fun holiday is a great way to dress up, enjoy some silly childlike fun, and shower your community with treats. It's an opportunity to connect with your neighbors in a low-stress environment, making way for new friendships.

Everyone remembers one house from their childhood that was the best to trick-or-treat at. It's the house you'd look forward to visiting all year, and was always the first stop of the night. Maybe they handed out full-size chocolate bars, or maybe the walkway to the door was like its own haunted house. Either way, they formed a core childhood memory for you.

Now that you own a house on the block, you've got an opportunity to be the favourite stop for a new generation. Here are some tips on how to have the best house for trick-or-treating:

  1. Choose your decor. The best Halloween themes for exciting kids are not the ultra-scary ones, but more classic Canadiana. Think pumpkins, orange and purple lights, ghost leaf bags, and more pumpkins! Look up some pictures of Disneyland at Halloween, and channel their aesthetic.
  2. Add scent and sound. Wax melters with Halloween scents are a fun and safe way to add ambiance. Place them strategically on the porch or just inside the doorway. Skip the horror sounds and opt for instrumentals of old-school Halloween songs. Remember: you're not trying to scare the kids, just delight them.
  3. Turn on the porch light and be near the door. Don't leave kids waiting or unsure of if you're participating. Decor will help make your home look inviting. As soon as you hear "trick-or-treat" be ready with your candy bowel, and make sure that you also dress up!
  4. Consider what you hand out. If you don't have the budget for giant pop bottles or candy bars, that is totally okay! Consider some fun ways for kids to get the candy you do have, such as putting their hand in a mystery box or rolling a big dice. If you know of any children on your street with specific allergies, ask their parents ahead of time what treats you could save for them.
  5. Ensure your property is safe. Make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep trick-or-treaters safe, and parents comfortable allowing their child to walk up to your door. It's the little considerations that will make your home a favourite.

Most important of them all: have fun!
