May 4th || Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you...)
May 5th, 12th & 19th || Free Compost Day || Calgary Compost Facility || This exciting opportunity is thanks to the City of Calgary who is "offering free compost for residents to use in their yards and gardens this spring. The compost is made from the food and yard waste collected in the Green Cart Program" (City of Calgary). Take advantage of this FREE event that will help your garden flourish! While you're at it, stop by a Starbucks and pick up some free coffee grounds to sprinkle into the mix - rumor has it coffee grounds are great for growing tomatoes. Get more information HERE.
May 5th || Jane's Walk || Bowness || Learn about this history of Bowness during this informative event! Join the bicycle tour or the walking tour (friendly dogs welcome) let by local Bowness historians. The Facebook event page notes, "the Bowness Community Association has joined with Lifecycle, Mainstreet Bowness BIA and the Bowness Historical Society to present this special way to come out and see Bowness!" May 5th || Cinco De Mayo
May 11th -13th || CBC Calgary Reads Big Book Sale || Calgary Curling Club || If you like big books and you cannot lie, this event is for you! Browse through this incredible collection of books. Whether you are looking for something in particular, or you want something new for your summer reading list, check out this event. This event goes on "Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a jazz and books night on Saturday evening. May 12th || Stars on Ice || Saddledome || Come down to the Saddledome to see the figure skaters and ice dancers who made Canada proud during the 2018 Winter Olympics. Avenue Calgary Magazine writes, "some of Canada’s best skaters are coming to Calgary as part of the 2018 Stars on Ice Tour. Expect to see notable names like Olympic medalists Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir, Meagan Duhamel, Eric Radford, Patrick Chan, Kaetlyn Osmond, Elvis Stojko and more take to the ice for a night of skating artistry." May 19th || Heritage Park Opening Weekend || Heritage Park || Nothing says Victoria Day long weekend quite like a walk down memory lane at Calgary's fantastic park museum. Heritage Park writes, "Celebrate the long weekend by stepping back in time. Calgary's Heritage Park Historical Village's 54th summer season begins on Saturday, May 19, 2018. May 18th & 19th || Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in Concert || Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium || Join the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra as they bring Harry Potter to life! Avenue Calgary Magazine writes, "listen to the orchestra play the score from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone live while the 2001 film about a young wizard’s introduction to the world of magic plays on-screen." May 21 || Victoria Day
May 23rd - 26th || Calgary International Children's Festival || Arts Commons & Olympic Plaza || "Aiming to ignite the imagination of Calgarian kids (and grown-ups, too), the city's International Children's Festival returns with four days of performances tailored directly towards children and their families" (Avenue Calgary Magazine). May 27th || Bowness Spring Clean Up || Bowness Community || Save yourself a trip to the landfill by dropping off your too-big-to-recycle-or-toss things at the Bowness Community Clean Up! Make sure you are not dropping off things before or after the event takes place. They are also looking for more volunteers, so sign up if you can!
