In the dead of winter, many Calgarians flee on vacation to get respite from the brutal cold. It is the perfect time to take a trip somewhere, anywhere, that has longer days and warmer temperatures. Any vacation is a luxury, no matter how far you travel. Even a weekend getaway to beautiful British Columbia can be a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of the city this time of the year.
Regardless of when you leave, where you go, or for how long, it is important to have a plan in place to protect your home in your absence. Discriminating criminals seek out properties that have clearly been left shuttered while the owners are away, knowing they are an easy target. Besides thieves, your home also has to contend with the elements. You need to be thoughtful in how you protect your property while you're gone.
Here are some tips for small adjustments you can make to keep your home safe, so you can enjoy your vacation with full peace of mind:
- Unplug: Go around your home and unplug all major appliances that don't need to run in the background, like the television and computer. This keeps them safe from any electrical issues.
- Turn Off the Water: Turn off the main water, and any outdoor faucets. Run a tap to get all the remaining water in the tubes cleared out. If something were to leak and cause a flood, most home insurance will not cover it unless you took this step.
- Turn Down the Heat: Set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature where your home stays heated, but not in excess. Remember: DO NOT FULLY TURN OFF THE HEAT. This will cause things to freeze and break.
- Find a Babysitter: Ask a friendly neighbour or friend to check on your home for you. They don't need to sleep there, but have someone check in on the property to clear snow (keeping in line with city bylaws), tuck your garbage and recycling bins away, and collect any mail that collects at your door or in your mailbox.
- Consider Security Devices: A security camera, movement sensitive lighting, and even a simple 'Beware of Dog' sign are all security measures that go the extra step to keep your home undesirable to any potential threats.
Be proactive in protecting your home when you are away for extended periods of time, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with it!
