Remembrance Day is this weekend on November 11th. In honor of this significant day in Canadian history, this week on the blog we are featuring blogs on Why We Remember, The Significance of the Poppy, and today's blog on Remembrance Day Ceremonies.
There are many opportunities to remember those who have bravely fought for Canada's freedom, and to thank those who are currently active in the military. Take a moment out of your weekend to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of Canadians past and present. Here is a list of all of the events happening around Calgary:
- Field Of Crosses Memorial Project || November 1st - 11th || Memorial Drive between 3rd & Centre St. NW || 3000 crosses have been set up along memorial drive, each "inscribed with the name, rank, age and date of death of a soldier from southern Alberta who was killed in action at some point throughout Canada’s history" (bestcalgaryhomes.com). Every sunrise there is a ceremonial flag raising, along with an official ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the 11th.
- Battalion Park Ceremony || November 11th || 3001 Signal Drive SW || At 10:30 a.m. you can join the Kings Own Calgary Regiment for the 6th Annual Battalion Park Remembrance Day Ceremony. Known for its stone numbers, "Originally named Camp Sarcee in 1915, Battalion Park commemorates the soldiers who trained here for the trench warfare of World War I. Members of the Calgary, Lethbridge, Central Alberta and Edmonton battalions hauled over 16,000 stones onto the hill to form the numbers 137, 113, 151 and 51, representing the regimental numbers of their battalions" (scacalgary.ca)
- Military Museums & The Hanger Flight Museum || November 11th || 4520 Crowchild Trail SW & 4629 McCall Way NE || With a donation of your choice you can explore both of these museums on Remembrance Day. Partake in a ceremony at 10:30, then spend the rest of your afternoon learning from veterans and exploring all the museums have to offer. Arrive early; parking is limited at both locations.
- Bowness Legion || November 11th || 7904 43 Avenue NW || Join the Bowness Legion at 10:00 a.m. for a remembrance day ceremony. More information on this event can be found HERE.
