Staying Cool During a Summer Move

Moving is never a small task—but moving in the height of summer can make it feel like a marathon in the desert. While Calgary’s summer season offers beautiful blue skies and warm prairie breezes, the temperatures can spike quickly, turning your moving day into a sweaty, exhausting event. But with a bit of planning and the right strategy, you can keep cool (literally and figuratively) during your summer move.

First, plan to begin your move early in the day. In Calgary, summer temperatures tend to rise rapidly by midday. Plan to begin your move as early in the morning as possible, ideally before 9 a.m. Not only is it cooler, but traffic is often lighter too—especially if you're moving on a weekday. If you are using movers, they will also appreciate this!

Moving boxes? Yes. Water bottles? Keep them out! The combination of physical exertion and summer heat can lead to dehydration faster than you think. Stock a cooler with ice-cold water, sports drinks, or electrolyte packs to keep everyone refreshed. Add some refreshing snacks, like fresh fruit, for a calorie boost.

Wear lightweight, breathable clothing in light colours—think athletic wear, moisture-wicking shirts, and comfy runners. This is not about looking cute; it's about staying comfortable in the heat, and having total movement flexibility. Don't forget a hat and sunglasses, too!

One of the perks of a summer move in Calgary? Long daylight hours! The sun doesn’t set until nearly 10 p.m. in July, so you have flexibility if things take longer than planned. Prioritize moving heavy and heat-sensitive items in the morning, and leave lighter loads for the cooler evening hours.

If you're moving into a new home, ensure the air conditioning (or at least fans) are functioning before move-in day. No one wants to unpack in a heatwave with no relief. If your new place doesn’t have AC, portable fans, open windows, and blackout curtains can help keep things cool.

Moving day can be overwhelming for your little ones—both furry and human. On a hot day, it’s even tougher. Consider dropping pets off with a friend or using a doggy daycare for the day. Kids might be happier at a park or splash pad with a family member while the heavy lifting gets done.

Moving is a big transition, and doing it in 25+ degree weather doesn’t make it easier—but with a bit of strategy (and a lot of water), you can beat the heat and start your next chapter on a cool note.
