If you want to be self-reliant around the house, a good selection of basic tools is essential to have in your toolbox. When you have the right tools, little tasks are not a big deal. To get the job done right you might want to invest in the following:
1. Claw Hammer – good for driving nails, hanging pictures and other things, and useful for small demolition projects.
2. Flathead Screwdriver – has a single blade that fits into the single slot of a flathead screw. Good for driving in screws and opening all sorts of things held together with screws!
3. Phillips Screwdriver – has a four star point at the end that fits into the corresponding screw’s cross-shaped depression. Allows a user to apply more torque than is possible with a flathead screwdriver.
4. Robertson Screwdriver – this one’s square and can be used to tighten hardware and adjust anything with loose screws.
5. Needle-nose Pliers – good for any household project that requires you to cut, bend, grip, or strip wire, or even for getting into tight spaces.
6. Crescent Wrench – like having 50 wrenches in one. An adjustable wrench with a sliding jaw that changes the width of the wrench so you can use the same tool on different size nuts and bolts.
7. Reversible Drill with Bit Set – the only electrical tool that you absolutely, positively have to have used for drilling holes or driving screws. Stick with a corded model as they’re lighter, cheaper and never run out of juice.
8. Tape Measure – a dependable 25′ retractable metal measuring tape is a must for sizing things up just right.
9. Staple Gun – comes in handy for a variety of projects that require fast tacking, such as fixing upholstery or repairing screens. Tough jobs where an ordinary stapler wouldn’t have a chance of penetrating the surface.
10. Plunger – you can never go wrong having a plunger in the house! So handy in a kitchen or bathroom emergency. There you go – now you’re all set the next time anything needs tightening, adjusting, hanging or measuring!
