During this very difficult year, Calgary came together. We always knew you would, Calgary!
Time and time again, Calgarians show up for each other and help the most vulnerable, extending a helping hand and lifting up spirits. While traditional methods of volunteering may not be as easy accessible these days because of COVID-19, there are lots of ways you can support your city, community and closest neighbors. It's going to be a snowy weekend; time some time to spread some sunshine.
Here are some ways to give back to your neighbors:
- Be a snow angel! Like we mentioned, the show is falling heavy all across the city this weekend. It is a legal requirement to keep the sidewalk outside of your home cleared, so while you're shoveling, keep going and do some of your neighbors, too! Walter is a 92 year old born and raised Calgarian who takes the time to shovel the walkways of his entire block in the winter! If Walter can do that, you can too.
- Offer to pick up groceries! While no one is too keep on eating unsolicited items, give your neighbors of loved ones a call to see if you can get anything from the grocery store for them. Immuno-compromised people are finding it increasingly difficult to get their basic necessities without risk, so extend a helping hand and be a personal shopper.
- Spread some cheer by posting encouraging messages on your window! Heather in the northwest has a rainbow heart mural she pained on the inside of her front window with simple acrylic paint. Not only is it a tribute to her late daughter, but it also brightens up the day of anyone who walks by. You could paint nice messages or seasonal drawings.
- Raise money for a good cause! Auction off your artwork, services, home items, etc. to raise money one of Calgary's many incredible charities. Places like the Mustard Seed, Samaritan's Purse, The Alex Centre and more are serving Calgarians in beautiful ways. Your money can help support them.
Helping others is good for the soul. You're the best, Calgary!
