Looking for ways to connect with and support your neighbours during these troubling times? Here are three suggestions:
1). If you're able bodied, offer to run an errand for your neighbour!
"The fewer of us out right now, the better, especially for older people and those with compromised immune systems at greater risk from the virus. If you’re young, healthy, and able, running an errand for a neighbour or someone in your community while you’re out is a super-specific, helpful way to give back. Since you don’t want to knock on their door, start by leaving a note with your cell number. Instead of saying “if there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know” try being more direct so they’re more likely to take you up on your offer: 'I’m going to Safeway tonight, can I pick up some groceries for you and drop them off?'." - The Bold Italic
2). Be a Snow Angel!
Next week Calgary is supposed to get more snow, so if you're feeling well spend the afternoon shoveling for neighbours. "Snow Angels are individuals who shovel a neighbour’s sidewalk just to be a good neighbour. A Snow Angel can be especially helpful to older adults, people with limited mobility and anyone else needing help, even on a temporary basis. The City encourages the practice of being a Snow Angel to ensure pedestrian safety, as intended by the snow bylaw." - The City of Calgary
3). Post a message of encouragement in your window!
In Edmonton, Global News reports, "less than a block from [Kristen Ackerman's] home she spotted hand drawn posters in a second floor window saying 'Stay safe' and 'Brave.'These signs of encouragement and positive thinking seem to be popping up city wide. Families who can’t get too close to their neighbours anymore thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, are putting inspirational messages on sidewalks and windows for anyone to see." Post a friendly message of hope for your neighbours!
