Today is National Truth & Reconciliation Day, and Orange Shirt Day.

Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad. As a little girl, she was taken to a residential school. Phyllis writes, “we never had very much money, but somehow my granny managed to buy me a new outfit to go to the Mission school. I remember going to Robinson’s store and picking out a shiny orange shirt. It had string laced up in front, and was so bright and exciting – just like I felt to be going to school! When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again… The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared, and how I felt like I was worth…

Calgary may be a beautiful city, but it's an old city. With its history comes some spooky tales, just like any place. We may not be known for hauntings and Halloween horror, but Calgary has plenty of stories to tell. Here are some of the haunted sites and scary stories from right here at home:

  • The Deane House:  " While the historic building was a boarding house, it was the scene of many murders. The apparition of a ghostly man who was gunned down on the front porch has been seen by visitors, as well as a man missing his legs in a hallway on the ground floor. In Mr Deane’s study, the apparition of a gentleman in period clothing has been seen smoking a cigar. Ghostly laughter is heard, cold spots are felt and a piano in a room on the second floor…

Calgary today looks so different than it did ten years ago, a hundred years ago, a thousand years ago, and a million years ago! In every era this place has been so special; particularly the community of Bowness.

Bowness is nestled right into the heart of the Bow Valley, which was carved out of the land by the Bow Glacier. It was originally inhabited by the pre-Clovis people, whose presence can be dated back 11,000 years. Following them were the Blackfoot, Stoney, Cree and Tsuu T’ina people. These tribes relied on the land for hunting and gathering, making the Bow River, fertile pastures, and wild Buffalo herds major assets. They diligently nurtured and protected their land, recognizing its incredible value.

When European settlers arrived in the…

Canada Day is July 1st, and we cannot wait to celebrate our great country! In the spirit of this special day, here are some fun facts about Canada that you may not know:

  • "The Vikings visited Canada! They arrived in 1021, several hundred years ahead of Christopher Columbus. They are believed to have settled on the northern side of Newfoundland at L’Anse aux Meadows, just past Greenland" (Fact File).
  • Canada's money is waterproof! That's right, our banknotes are made of plastic. They also include braille to help the visually impaired, and are transitioning from a horizontal to a vertical design. We do not use pennies anymore, and have the infamous Loonie ($1 coin), and Toonie ($2 coin).
  • "[Canada is] bigger than the entire European Union (33…
