Happy Cinco De Mayo!

This celebratory day is a great way to kick off the beautiful weather we have been having here in Calgary. While many believe Cinco De Mayo to be Mexico’s Independence Day, it actually marks “the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations” (read more about it HERE).

Cinco De Mayo starts May’s celebrations, but here are some more events happening around YYC you definitely will want to check out:

Spring is well underway, and summertime is quickly approaching. With the warm weather and new seasons come new activities, such as gardening, spring cleaning, backyard BBQ’s, etc.. Many of the things that we do on our property’s during the warm months have specific bylaws attached to them. Here are some to be aware of:

Property Care: The spring is a great time to do outdoor renovations. Not only is this good to do for the sake of your property’s value and maintenance, but it is also illegal to neglect outdoor areas of your property in need of renovation. The City of Calgary notes, “all balconies, decks, fences, porches and stairs must be kept in ‘good repair.’ Fines for violations range between $100 and $300.”

Spring Cleaning: With spring cleaning…

The detached sector of housing is what really drove the market this year. CREB® reports, “February sales totaled 1,342 units, which is still 19 per cent below long-term averages, but an improvement over the past two years.” One really wonderful thing that happened is that the average time a property is on the market dropped to 2.4 months, which has helped ease downward pressure on pricing. This means sellers are selling their homes faster and for better prices. The benchmark price for a property was $501,900 in February.

CREB® president David P. Brown notes, “there seems to be a new sense of optimism these days. Some sellers are feeling upbeat about the changing landscape and the improved chances of selling their home. Other people are looking at the…

Here at Team Ken Richter we love working in the City of Calgary. One community that is especially close to our heart is Bowness. Few neighborhoods have as much resilience, passion, history and community spirit as Bowness. We are so excited about what is going on in the community of Bowness, so for today’s blog we are going to share some of these things with you.

The Re-Opening of Marty’s Corner Store: Back in 2013 the Calgary flooding drowned Marty’s Corner store, which had been a Bowness staple for almost 70 years. The corner store “[offered] residents a community gathering place where children spent their allowance on sweets, parents purchased bread, milk and other groceries, and seniors gathered for morning coffee” (The Calgary Herald). Newly…

August long weekend is almost here and with it comes the opportunity for many people to get away from the city and go exploring. While not everyone has the time or the money to go on some elaborate vacation across the globe, one needn’t drive far to find beauty and new things.

Here are some daycation ideas for those wanting to explore Alberta this August long weekend:

Frank’s Slide: This is the perfect place for those of you who love history. Frank’s Slide is located north of Calgary and is a historic site marking the place where part of Turtle Mountain collapsed, burying a small town back in the early 1900’s. Not only is there a great visitor center full of old photos, artifacts and information, but you can walk through the massive rocks at the…
