It's Christmas morning for cowboys and cowgirls everywhere as Stampede officially kicks off! The greatest outdoor show on earth attracts millions to Calgary every single summer and has been a wild hit since its inception in 1912. While some Calgarians roll their eyes as tourists flock to our city, we feel proud to live in a place that hosts such a fantastic event focused on sportsmanship and the wild, wild west. The Calgary Stampede has been wowing attendees for over 100 years, and this year will be no different.

Some new activities are hitting the Saddledome grounds this year, such as a quarter pipe in the Monster Energy Compound and curling in the Big Four Roadhouse. One highly anticipated new event is sidesaddle racing. Avenue Magazine writes,…

It is civic census time!

What even is a civic census? The City of Calgary writes, "The Civic Census is the official count of dwelling units and the population who are living in these units, by the door to door physical collection and recording of data. This count of dwellings and residents may be supplemented yearly with other information such as the periodic age/gender distribution data, etc." The first ever Calgary census took place in 1931! Just think about how much Calgary has grown in the last year; can you imagine how different our results today will be from the results back then?

A census does more than simply count how many people currently live in the city. The information gathered from the census "is used by The City for a variety of…

At the start of every movie, there is a sweeping shot of the city it takes place in. For Paris they show the Eiffel Tower, for London they show Big Ben, for New York they show the Empire State building, for Vancouver they show the waterfront. These shots focus on the most recognizable feature in a city to immediately ground a film. It is a subtle and effective tactic to get people to recognize a city right away.

While not many movies find their setting in Calgary, we too have buildings that help others to instantly recognize us. Places such as the original Fire Station, the Saddledome and Peace Bridge are plastered all over websites and pamphlets promoting our great City. While for some cities, such as London, their most recognized building stays…

Happy long weekend!

There is nothing quite as glorious as having not one, not two, but three days in a row off! Long weekends feel like the only weekends you get to truly relax, which is why we are planning on making the most of it. They only come around once every month or so, after all!

Not sure what to do this long weekend? Here are some ideas:

  • Stock up your DVR by scheduling it to record all of the Olympic events! Since South Korea is in a much different time zone, all the best Olympic action is happening while we're fast asleep. Load up the DVR, pick up all your favorite drinks and snacks and binge-watch away. The bonus? You can fast forward through all of the commentary and get straight to the action.
  • Spend a day going around…
